The Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton hosted a premarital seminar at the Blinder Memorial Chapel, Feb. 19 for military couples considering marriage.
The seminar, titled “P.S., before you say I do,” helps educate Marines, sailors and their significant others about potential stressors and difficulties that could arise during the early stages of marriage.
“This seminar deals with the marital realities, financial realities, legal realities and the issues related to family readiness and domestic violence that we see in the military today,” said Lt. Cmdr. Frank Munoz, the NHCP chaplain.
During the seminar, couples received practical information on various topics that included ways to maintain a mutually satisfying sexual, spiritual and emotional relationship, conflict resolution skills, communication skills and financial management tips.
“Marines E-5 and below are getting married at younger ages than the civilian population and their marriages are failing at significant rates, well above national averages,” said Munoz. “Stressful marriages and divorces impact a unit’s operational readiness so we are looking to prevent that by improving the well-being of our Marines and sailors prior to them getting married.”
Marine Corps Installations West’s deputy command chaplain, Cmdr. Ray Bailey, stated the number one reason for divorce among military couples is attributed to financial strains.
“I come from a divorced family and I haven’t really seen a good marriage structure,” said Lance Cpl. Michael Arredondo, an assault amphibious vehicle crewman with the 3rd Assault Amphibian Battalion. “I just wanted to get something that I can take back home with me so that when I have a family of my own I can be stable and I can be that proactive person.”
In addition to “P.S., before you say I do,” the Marine Corps Community Services Marine and Family Programs offers workshops developed to improve military marriages and relationships. The workshops include Lifestyle Insights, Networking, Knowledge and Skills, Prevention & Relationship Enhancement Program and 5 Love Languages for Couples.
“P.S., before you say I do” seminars are held on the third Wednesday of each month. To register for future seminars contact Vicki Miller, the executive assistant to the command chaplain, at email@example.com or call (760) 725-1223.
