Sponsorship offers new meal benefits for Pendleton youth programs

By | | September 12, 2012

Marine Corps Community Services' Children, Youth and Teen Programs on Camp Pendleton have announced a new sponsorship with the Child and Adult Care Food Program, which changes eligibility for free or reduced-priced meal benefits.

The newly configured guidelines are scheduled to begin July 1, 2009 and last through June 30, 2010. Only children from a household with an income at or below the new guidelines are eligible for the benefits.

“This couldn’t happen at a better time,” said Kimberly D. Simmons, military spouse, Camp Pendleton. “Having the new guidelines for the meals at the day cares really help out the whole family.”

Although the Child and Adult Care Food Program has changed its guidelines on the prices, parents need not worry. The fees that parents pay for child care services will not be affected. The Child Youth Teen Program receives a reimbursement based on their category, if a family’s income meets the criteria for free or reduced food prices.

“With the reimbursements we get back from the state, we can purchase more lunches, keeping the overall prices of the day cares at a minimum,” said Cory E. Thomas, CYTP Food Services Manager, Camp Pendleton.

The new guidelines do not apply to households that receive food stamps, Kinship Guardianship Payment Program, The Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations, or children who are recipients of California Work Opportunity and Responsibility to Kids. The children covered under these programs are automatically eligible for free meal benefits.

“Its nice to know that since so many parents on base use  day care programs the USDA is doing something to help them,” said Simmons.
