Camp Pendleton held the 2015 Heartbreak Ridge Run, April 11. The event is an off-road running race held in the northwestern foothills of the base. It is comprised of a half marathon, and 10 km, five km and one km races.

The day concluded with a tour of the Infantry Immersion Trainer, a hands-on, mixed reality training facility that simulates the sights, smells, sounds and feel of village, in designated locations. The purpose of the facility is to provide a realistic environment in which to train Marines for deployment.

A group of senior executives from the Orange Country Young Presidents’ Organization came aboard Camp Pendleton for a day of touring base training facilities, observing range operations, and viewing aviation static displays, March 31. The executives learned about military operations in urban terrain and reconnaissance training from Company C, First Reconnaissance Battalion.

Camp Pendleton firefighters extinguish nearly 300 wildland fires on base annually. More than 24,062 acres of land burned which is twice as much as the previous year according to Robert Johnson, Deputy Chief for Fire Prevention at Camp Pendleton’s Security & Emergency Services Station. Some of the many ways base residents can mitigate the risk of wildland fires from starting or spreading, from properly handling equipment to establishing fire hazard zones.

Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton supported the Ironman 70.3 California Triathlon held on base and in Oceanside, March 28. The Ironman triathlon is an endurance competition that includes 1.2 miles of swimming by Oceanside, 56 miles of biking around Camp Pendleton and a 13.1 mile half-marathon in Oceanside. Over 3,000 athletes from around the world participated in the triathlon, which offered a $60,000 cash prize and qualifying points for the winners.

Alpha Company took home first place during the Headquarters & Support Battalion, Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, field meet conducted at the Lake O'Neill track, March 20. The Marines took part in sporting activities to include a relay race, kettlebell throw, dizzy relay race, wheelbarrow relay, squad pushups, pull-ups, ammo can lifts and a tug of war.

California Pizza Kitchen sent more than 700 Volunteers to assist School of Infantry – West Marines and Sailors to clean and renovate areas of San Onofre Beach, March 18. The groups broke up into three teams with one group painting and renovating the beach club, another handling landscaping and the third group painting the theatre and building playground equipment.

Marines with Bridge Company, 7th Engineer Support Battalion, 1st Marine Logistics Group, drive a Combat Rubber Raiding Craft onto the back of an Improved Ribbon Bridge during a training exercise on the Colorado River in Laughlin, Nev., March 17-21, 2014.  More than 60 Marines trained in moving heavy equipment, to include 7-tons and Humvees, across a flowing body of water using BEBs and an Improved Ribbon Bridge. The IRB is a multi-piece floating bridge that can function as a raft. The BEBs were used to push the raft against the current. Despite being accustomed to training in a bay with little to no current, these Marines managed to transport two 7-tons up the river at the same time.
