Sergeant Major Hector N. Ortiz

Sergeant Major Ortiz enlisted in the Marine Corps in August 1993 and underwent recruit training at 2d Recruit Training Battalion, Hotel Company, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina. 

Upon graduation of recruit training he attended Marine Combat Training at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina and was ordered to the Field Artillery Cannon Crewman Course at Fort Sill, Oklahoma for training as a Field Artillery Cannon Crewman and was assigned the MOS 0811.
 
In March 1994, Private First Class Ortiz reported to Romeo Battery, 5th Battalion 10th Marines where he served as a Cannon Crewman, Howitzer Section Chief, Local Security Chief, and Guns Platoon Sergeant.  He deployed with Battalion Landing Team 1/6, Special Operations Capable, 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit in support of Operations Provide Promise, Deny Flight, and Sharp Guard, and (2) deployments attached to 3d Battalion, 12th Marines located in Okinawa, Japan in support of the Unit Deployment Program. 
 
In November 1999, Sergeant Ortiz was assigned to India Battery, 3d Battalion, 12th Marines and shortly upon assignment was ordered to Drill Instructor School, Parris Island, South Carolina.

In October 2000, Staff Sergeant Ortiz reported to Drill Instructor School; upon completion of Drill Instructor School, Staff Sergeant Ortiz reported to Hotel Company, 2nd Recruit Training Battalion.

In February 2004, Staff Sergeant Ortiz reported to Bravo Battery, 1st Battalion, 10th Marines and was immediately attached to Battalion Landing Team 1/2, 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit as Guns Platoon Sergeant and local security chief. 

In July 2004, SSgt Ortiz deployed to Iraq and served as Guns Platoon Sergeant and Battery Gunnery Sergeant for Bravo Battery South as the battery conducted split-battery operations in Iskandariyah, Iraq. 

In February 2005, he redeployed to CONUS and assumed his duties as Battery Gunnery Sergeant for Bravo Battery.  During his time as Battery Gunnery Sergeant, he participated in various relocation training exercises.

In November 2005, Gunnery Sergeant Ortiz deployed to Okinawa, Japan in support of the UDP and participated in relocation exercise to Hijudai, Japan, and Camp Rodriguez, South Korea. 

In January 2007, Gunnery Sergeant Ortiz attached to Battalion Landing Team 3/8 with 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit.  He deployed with BLT 3/8, 22nd MEU in August 2007 and participated in various training operations in Kuwait. 

In May 2008, Gunnery Sergeant Ortiz reported to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) to fill the billet as the Assistant Marine Officer Instructor (AMOI) for Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC) Unit, RPI in Troy, NY.  During his assignment, Gunnery Sergeant Ortiz also served as a Sergeant Instructor at the Officer Candidate School (OCS), Quantico, Virginia during the summer of 2008 and 2009.  He served as a Sergeant Instructor during the second increment with the PLC-Juniors, 2nd Plt, India Company.  During his subsequent tour in 2009, he served as Sergeant Instructor for the first increment; assigned to the PLC-Seniors/NROTC, 1st Plt, Golf Company.

In August 2010, First Sergeant Ortiz reported to 3d Battalion 11th Marines where he served as Battery First Sergeant for Kilo Battery and Headquarters Battery.

In July 2013, First Sergeant Ortiz reported to Company A, 4th Assault Amphibian Battalion Virginia Beach, Virginia where he served as the Inspector-Instructor First Sergeant. 

In May 2015, Sergeant Major Ortiz reported to Marine Wing Support Squadron 372 Camp Pendleton, California where he served as Squadron Sergeant Major.  In September 2015, Sergeant Major Ortiz deployed with MWSS-372 as part of Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force-Crisis Response-Central Command (SPMAGTF-CR-CC) 16.1.  In March 2017, he again deployed with MWSS-372 as part of SPMAGTF-CR-CC 17.2.

In December 2017, Sergeant Major Ortiz reported to Infantry Training Battalion, School of infantry (West), Camp Pendleton, California where he served as the Battalion Sergeant Major. In September 2019 he reported to his current assignment as the Sergeant Major for Security and Emergency Services Battalion, Camp Pendleton, California.

Sergeant Major Ortiz’ personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal with gold star in lieu of second award, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with two gold stars in lieu of third award, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with two gold stars and Combat distinguishing device “V”, and a Combat action ribbon.
