HURLBURT FIELD, Fla. -- The new Air Force Special Operations Command wing at Cannon Air Force Base, N.M., will be designated the 27th Special Operations Wing.
The 27th has a long and distinguished history since it's inception as the 27th Bombardment Group (Light) at Barksdale Field, La., Feb. 1, 1940. Over the past 67 years, the 27th designation has been assigned to several groups and wings at a myriad of locations around the world. The 27th Fighter Wing was organized Aug. 15, 1947, at Kearney Airfield, Neb., and the 27th Tactical Fighter Wing moved to Cannon AFB, Feb. 18, 1958. The 27th SOW will continue to build upon the relationship enjoyed between Cannon AFB and the State of New Mexico.
