Press Release #19-001 - 11th Annual Reconnaissance (Recon) Challenge
16 May 2019

More than 60 competitors participated in the 11th Annual Reconnaissance (Recon) Challenge on Camp Pendleton May 16, 2019.

The grueling 30-mile course was comprised of hiking mountainous terrain, underwater knot-tying exercises, a 1,000 yard open-ocean swim and a marksmanship event among other obstacles. All events are aimed at testing the mental and physical skills reconnaissance Marines are trained to use in operational environments.

The challenge brings members of the reconnaissance and Camp Pendleton community together to include family members and veterans to honor the fallen Marines of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Inherent Resolve. Participants ran in teams in the name of a fallen Marine and paid tribute at the end of the challenge by hanging dog tags on the iconic "battlefield cross" at the finish line.

Spectators joined in cheering on the teams. Gold star families of the deceased being honored were in attendance as well as family members and friends of the participants.
