MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. --
There will be an increase of training noise aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton due to Exercise Steel Knight 2020 (SK20), a large-scale training event held by 1st Marine Division. Marines and Sailors from the 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Logistics Group, and 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing will conduct SK20 from December 2 - December 20, 2019, at MCB Camp Pendleton, Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms, California, and other military installations in southern California and Arizona.
SK20 will be the largest Division-led exercise in recent history, comprising nearly 13,000 personnel. The training enhances the Division's ability to "fight tonight" against peer and near-peer adversaries.
SK20 will provide intense training in an expeditionary environment to ensure the 1st Marine Division remains combat-ready, interoperable, deployable on short notice, and lethal when called into action. Ship-to-shore maneuver, live-fire ranges, air assault, and casualty evacuation operations will all be included in this year's exercise.
Camp Pendleton will play a vital role in the training as it is the Marine Corps’ premier expeditionary training facility that allows for ship-to-shore maneuver and amphibious operations.
1st Marine Division's participation in SK20 is in line with the 2018 National Defense Strategy, and the 38th Commandant of the Marine Corps Planning Guidance. SK20 will provide an opportunity to demonstrate that 1st Marine Division is optimized for naval expeditionary warfare in contested spaces, and is purpose-built to facilitate sea denial and assured access in support of the fleets.
