News Release #23-001 The Security of Camp Pendleton, IRONMAN 23, remains in good hands
4 Apr 2023

CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. –  At approximately 11:00 a.m. April 1, a vehicle attempted to gain unauthorized access to the installation through Cristianitos Gate during an off-base traffic pursuit involving the California Highway Patrol. A Military Policeman assigned to the gate deployed the final denial barriers and successfully disabled the vehicle. The quick thinking and sound judgment of the Marine on duty prevented any incursion to base property, or any interruption to the base residents and its visitors.

The driver of the vehicle was transported to Providence Mission Hospital by the Camp Pendleton Fire Department in an unknown status. No other personnel, vehicles or structures were involved in the collision.

“Thanks to our well-trained PMO Marines and their quick reactions, Camp Pendleton and everyone on our installation remains safe today," said Maj. Shelley Ansbigian, Operations Officer, MCB Camp Pendleton PMO.

The Cristianitos gate remains open for in-bound and out-bound traffic.

The mission of PMO is to ensure the safety and security of the installation 24-hours a day, 365 days a year, while also conducting law enforcement operations across the base.

MCB Camp Pendleton was hosting a portion of the IRONMAN 2023 triathlon competition on the installation at the time of this incident. Due to the rapid response and professionalism of Camp Pendleton’s Provost Marshal's Office, emergency services personnel, and our interagency partners, base activities resumed as scheduled.
