MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. -- An unexpecting crowd packing the Base Training Center/ Theater June 26 to see "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines" - before anyone else in the world could see it - bellowed thunderous cheers as Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jay Leno appeared live on stage.
"It (was) my token of appreciation to say thank you to all of you," said Schwarzenegger, whose idea it was to give Pendleton service members first crack at seeing his first Terminator movie in 12 years.
The crowd lined up outside the theater around 5:30 p.m. to see what they were told was a sneak preview of the movie, preceded by a raffle and prize giveaway.
But they got more.
Leno appeared on stage to hand out the remaining prizes in the raffle, including two tickets to The Tonight Show.
Schwarzenegger didn't come out until after Leno introduced him. Schwarzenegger addressed the crowd, then walked into the audience to shake hands while Marines, spouses and children chanted "Arnold! Arnold!"
Lance Cpl. Jose A. Rojas, an administrative clerk with Headquarters and Support Battalion, Marine Corps Base, was among those who got more than he bargained for.
"It was a surprise to see him in person," he said. "It was a good experience for the Marines and the families to see a celebrity."
"It was pretty cool," Lance Cpl. Roann B. White, a service record book clerk at the Consolidated Personnel Administration Center, said about Schwarzenegger's visit. "He was really good about it, and he gave a really good speech."
"The Marines are the real terminators. Whenever there is a problem they terminate it," Schwarzenegger said.
