MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. -- Face-painted children snacked on funnel cake, while parents sipped old-fashion root beer from a tin mug at the 29th annual Harbor Days at , Sept. 19 and 20.
Both military families and local residents were able to watch live performances at two stages and walk around the harbor looking at different types of art merchandise displayed by vendors.
A large variety of events and displays ensured there was something for each family member to enjoy.
Non-profit organizations offered information to passers by, and Camp Pendleton Marines and Sailors were on hand with displays of tactical vehicles such as an assault amphibian vehicle, landing craft air cushion and high mobility multipurpose wheeled vehicle.
“Every year (Ryan and Bondy) wait for the opportunity to climb on the tanks and play with the radios,” said Bondy Miller, father of Ryan and Bondy Miller.
A veteran himself, Miller added that it is great that the military shows its support for the community by being there.
“Seeing the excitement on the kids faces when you explain to them what each part is and how the vehicle operates, is worth (the time and effort),” said Lance Cpl. Michael Vanzutphen, light armored vehicles 25 gunner, 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division. “Being here is an excellent opportunity to show the community a different aspect of the Marine Corps that they may not get to see on a daily basis."
After Sunday, the boys will have to wait until next year to climb on the vehicles and talk to the service members, Miller said.
Anyone can enjoy this annual celebration that takes place every third weekend in September. Next year’s festival will mark Harbor Days 30th year.
