Officials at the Camp Pendleton Animal Shelter unleashed a new and improved animal play area during a ribbon-cutting ceremony, Nov. 14.

The project came about when local life scouts from Boy Scouts of America, were looking to complete a community service project.

“Once we saw the animal shelter, we knew it needed a lot of work,” said Ryan Denton, life scout.

The project began Sept. 6, with about 20 Marines and civilians volunteering more than 450 hours to make the hopes of a dog yard a reality.

“It was tough work, but it was worth it,” said Lance Cpl. John P. Derhake, air framer, Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 39, Marine Corps Air Station Camp Pendleton. “I helped put up the snake fence, level out the lot and sod the lawn.”

An additional 1,500 sq. feet was added to the play area, doubling the existing space behind the main animal shelter. The new area now features a new dog house, a real fire hydrant and a seating bench in the middle of the yard.

“We couldn’t do it without everybody’s help and support,” said Teresa Setter, supervisor, Camp Pendleton’s Animal Shelter. “I’m just so happy to be a part of this.”

The new area is more appealing to the customers who come to interact with pets before adoption, said Karen Loy, lead animal caretaker, Camp Pendleton’s Animal Shelter. It is away from the rest of the public, for that intimate time between customers and pets.

During the ceremony, Setter awarded all the volunteers with letters of recognition for their hard work spent at the shelter.
