MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. -- Each year, hundreds of people make New Year’s resolutions with hopes to better themselves. Some promise to get in better physical shape, others want to attend college or quit a bad habit.
Even though these commitments are made with good intentions, some may find it difficult to achieve their goals.
Professionals on Camp Pendleton can assist with making the road to a successful resolution a little less stressful.
These fitness, health and education advisors agree, resolutions should be realistic and practical regardless of the goal.
“Setting a goal to lose 10 pounds in one week is not healthy,” said Ray Sanchez, manager, Paige Field House. “In order to lose weight, people need to eat healthy and exercise.”
Individuals also should be persistent and stay focused on their goal, he added.
“Any Semper Fit facility has all the information that can help you get in better shape,” Sanchez said. “Just stop by any base fitness center and ask for help.”
Physical fitness is not the only challenging resolution; breaking bad habits could be even more difficult.
Those trying to quit smoking should first make sure they want to quit and then find support, said Julius H. Phillips, health educator, smoking cessation, Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton.
Having professional help during those tough times can make a difference, explained Phillips. Prescribed medicine and classes on quitting smoking are available to service members through the hospital.
Smoking is a routine many plan to quit for the New Year, but others may want to start the habit of studying.
Taking college courses is a goal anyone should pursue, said Terry Pede, education and operation training assistant, Headquarters and Support Battalion, Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton.
Going back to school may seem stressful and expensive, but there are resources and classes that can make it easier and less confusing.
The base’s Joint Education Center offers the College 101 course among other educational services that could be beneficial for receiving tuition assistance and revealing the variety of colleges available to them.
Whatever your New Year’s resolution may be, know there are professionals on Camp Pendleton who can help you along the way.
