One of three Camp Pendleton’s 2010 Bench Press Challenge Series was held at Paige Fieldhouse, March 26.

Thirty-eight males and two females competed for title of base’s strongest bench presser. Participants included active-duty and retired service members, family members and government employees.

The competition’s overall winning weight was lifted by Master Sgt. Michael W. Green, maintenance control chief, Helicopter Medium Light Attack Squadron 469, Marine Corps Air Station Camp Pendleton, who bench pressed 475 pounds.

Noemi P. Rodriguez, a Marine Corps Community Services employee took first in the Women's category.

"I like the bench press challenge because you are really your own competition," said Cpl. Douglas L. David, automotive organizational mechanic, 1st Maintenance Battalion, 1st Marine Logistics Group, who took second place in the 220.5 weight class. "It's like a battle against the weights instead of an enemy in combat."

Points for the challenge were scored using Wilks Coefficient Chart, which uses a formula that evens the playing field by factoring in weight and age.

"The bench press is a true test of strength," said Staff Sgt. Mathew A. Reep, combat instructor, School of Infantry West, Marine Corps Base camp Pendleton. "Just keep trying and you'll eventually get better."

Two other contests will be held at base’s 21 Area Fitness Center on July 30 and 52 Area Fitness Center on Oct. 22.
