General’s barber continues top notch haircuts

12 Jul 2010 | Lance Cpl. Mike Atchue Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton

Marines from throughout history share many unique life experiences including boot camp, barracks duty and the well-known Marine Corps haircut.

When it comes to hair regulations, the Corps’ female warriors have it tough. However, they have yet to experience the hours of waiting for a hair cut that all ranks hope will be of high enough quality to be of Marine Corps standards.

There is a little known secret to getting a high quality cut without the wait at Camp Pendleton. That secret is Tony’s Barbershop.

Tony’s Barbershop is unlike any other found on base because Tony himself is the solo barber.

Also, unlike any barbershop on base, patrons wont have to worry about a pesky line around their heads from a poorly executed fade, and a enjoy a friendly conversation with Tony during their haircut.

“I treat people the same, with a friendly manner no matter what their rank is, whenever they are sitting in my chair or have a scheduled appointment, they are number one, no matter if they are a private or a general,” said Erding “Tony” Sarsilmaz..

Tony has cut the hair of Marines, sailors, soldiers, airmen, commandants, celebrities, women and children for more than 15 years on Camp Pendleton and has hundreds photographs covering the walls to prove it.

“I received my first picture in 1996, and ever since then whenever my customers leave they continue the tradition,” he said. “But I will only accept the picture if I have cut their hair and the photo is signed!”

Whether he’s giving you advice, describing his life story, or even discussing the weekend, a friendly conversation is a guarantee with Tony.

Tony’s Barbershop takes appointments every 20 minutes between 7 a.m. and 2 p.m. Monday through Friday and can be reached (760) 725-5397.
