To send the 2010 summer season out with a bang, Camp Pendleton’s Paige Fieldhouse hosted the Marine Corps Community Services Sports Jam, Aug. 27.

More than 200 service members participated in the event that concluded the 101 Days of Summer Drug-Free Challenge. The event was also sponsored by the Single Marine Program and Semper Fit Health Promotions.

The 101 Days of Summer series creates unit functions to utilize programs that share the common goal of eliminating illegal drug use and promoting responsible use of alcohol within the military.

The Sports Jam included men and women teams for 3-on-3 basketball, singles racquetball, singles table tennis, co-ed teams for 5-person dodge ball and 4-person volleyball.

“I think it’s a great opportunity to bring us together for a night just to have fun,” said Lance Cpl. Alex K. Reed, administrative clerk, 1st Marine Division. “Our office made us all come and participate, and I’m glad we did.”

The program included a variety of unit competitions, giveaways, entertainment and educational opportunities.

“Putting on this event is something we all take great pride in,” said Cari L. Gordonne, fitness programs supervisor, Semper Fit Division. “Our goal here is to inform our service members of the consequences of drug and alcohol abuse.”

Throughout the 101 Days of Summer, Camp Pendleton’s units were challenged to accumulate the most points by attending scheduled sporting events, monthly meetings, participating in competitions, taking urinalysis tests and conducting unit training.

Marine Corps Community Service organizes this event to occur between Memorial Day and Labor Day each year because drug and alcohol related incidents occur more often between those two holidays, said Gordonne.
