MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. -- For those in pursuit of their American Idol dream to become reality, Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton’s Public Affairs Office has the perfect opportunity.
“Marine Idol” is the year-round audition for service members who can represent the installation by showcasing their talent to thousands of spectators.
“Marine Idol began in 2008 because Camp Pendleton’s surrounding communities requested active duty service members to sing the national anthem at many of their events,” said Sgt. Darhonda V. Rodela, media chief, MCB Camp Pendleton Public Affairs Office. “We saw a growing need to support multiple requests, so the concept of Marine Idol was created.”
In addition to honoring the request of Pendleton residents, having service members sing the national anthem in uniform has proven to be a morale booster for many.
“When you see a uniformed service member, it not only shows that they are patriots, but they representing America and the Marine Corps,” said Sgt. James M. Mercure, community relations chief, MCB Camp Pendleton Public Affairs Office.
To make the cut, the sergeants of the public affairs office are searching for service members who can meet several different criteria: the ability to sing to large groups of people, a good singing voice, presentable appearance and must be active-duty military.
Mercure also encourages applicants to bring any recorded samples of their talent if possible.
Applicants who do not have recorded experience should still apply, live auditions are mandatory for all.
“We are looking for a large variety of service members,” said Rodela. “Marines and sailors of any rank are welcome, both male and female, solo or duet, rhythm and blues style to country.”
