The champion of 2010’s Pendleton Cup Volleyball League was crowned during the final game of the season at the Camp Pendleton Paige Fieldhouse, Oct. 25.

The two finalists competing for the title were Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton’s Planet Hollywood, and Combat Logistics Regiment 15’s Supply Battalion. Planet Hollywood’s relentless ambition won them the five-game series with a total of four wins and one loss.

The competition went back and forth with NHCP taking the first two sets, Supply Bn. taking the third, and NHCP finishing the series off with a 25-22 win in the last set.

“It was close the whole time,” said Phillip Bryant, athletics coordinator and league director, Marine Corps Community Services Camp Pendleton. “The competition was so strong and intense; it could have gone either way.”

Assault Craft Unit Five’s Swift Intruders took home the third place title against Marine Corps Installations West Wolf Pack, sweeping the series with three wins and no losses.

The top three teams took home plaques and trophies in recognition of their accomplishment for their units. The participating units also received points toward MCCS’s Pendleton Cup Series.

The Pendleton Cup series provides active duty military personnel, regardless of skill or experience, an opportunity to take part in a variety of competitive unit sports while competing for monetary prizes to be given to their respective unit’s funds.

“The turnout this year was solid,” Bryant said. “With the three years I’ve been the athletics director for MCCS, this was by far the most competitive season.”
