MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. -- Children dressed as vampires, ghosts, Frankensteins, Cinderellas, witches and their parents, enjoyed the 13 rooms of horror at Camp Pendleton’s Wire Mountain Youth and Teen Center, Oct 28-30.
The Annual “Haunted House of Horror” offered an affordable night of fun for base residents to celebrate the Halloween season. The haunted house was open all three nights from 6 to 9 p.m., allowing everyone to enjoy the terror.
“I’ve been to the haunted houses in San Diego and this one is definitely better,” said Cpl. Bryce R. Meinders, physical security specialist, Military Police Company, Security Battalion, Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. “It’s nice that they offer different levels of intensity to also accommodate the younger children.”
The Haunted House featured 13 different themes, one for each room that included everything from scare crows to vampires. At the end of the tour participants were chased out by a chainsaw wheeling monster.
“The chainsaw was the scariest part for me,” said Connor Meinders, 6, son of a Camp Pendleton Marine. “I was screaming the whole way out.”
The event was coordinated by The Wire Mountain Youth and Teen Center with the help of volunteers from Amphibious Assault Schools Battalion, Consolidated Substance Abuse Counseling Center and base youth in the area.
“With parents overseas, the haunted house is here to help everyone have a good time,” said Jacqueline R. Patterson, director, Youth and Teen Programs, Marine and Family Services. “The house is within walking distance for many, which was perfect for the few that ran all the way home after their tour.”
The haunted house has been a part of Camp Pendleton’s Halloween traditions since 1997 and families tell us that it gets better every year, said Patterson.
