MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. -- Even though California’s warm weather will not provide the traditional white Christmas, the holiday spirit and cheer still filled the air during the annual Winter Wonderland Festival at Camp Pendleton’s Abby Reinke Center, Dec. 16.

Hundreds of Marines, sailors and their families lined up around the building to take part in many festivities as a community.

“This event is a great way to bring the community together,” said Darcie McClain, recreation specialist and event coordinator, Abby Reinke Center. “The children and families are so happy when we have events like this because it allows them to socialize with others their age.”

During the event, the guests were able to take photos with Santa Claus and Rudolph the red-nose reindeer, dance with the Gingerbread Man, enjoy free snacks, play games to win prizes, ride on the express train and get nutritional education while socializing.

The event came together by having Marines, sailors and family members volunteer their time to dress up as mascots, set up arts and craft tables, decorate and spread the holiday joy.

“If it wasn’t for all the volunteers, this event would never happen,” said McClain. “Every volunteer took time out of their busy schedules to help put on an event for the families to enjoy. It brought a smile to everyone’s face.”

As the sun set over the horizon and holiday music filled the air, the event was concluded with a raffle-drawing where a family walked away with a brand new gaming console as the grand prize.

“The festival was such a success this year,” said McClain. “It’s a great feeling to bring such holiday cheer and spirit to military families.”
