Throughout the CG’s Cup, most events will take place on the field or in a gymnasium. However, hosting the cup on the beach offers a variety of different sports to be played such as horseshoes, tug-o-war and surfing competitions.

“A bad day at the beach is better than a good day at work,” said Eddie F. Bolanos, a sports coordinator for Marine Corps Community Services Camp Pendleton.

This year’s event held a total of 18 teams, 10 four-person teams and eight two-person teams. Each unit has their own standard operating procedures on releasing Marines for these types of events.

Each unit should have a representative that is responsible for communicating with the command to get more Marines and sailors out to these types of events, Bolanos said. If operational commitments dictate, commands may not be able to send service members to these events.

During the Commanding Generals Cup service members competed for points in more than 30 events including, surfing competitions, combat water polo, paintball, a tactical athlete challenge, and other key athletic events. At the conclusion of the series, the unit with the most awarded points will receive up to $21,000 toward their unit's recreational funds.

Ninth Communications Battalion placed first in the four-person competition, and 11th Marine Regiment took first in the two-person event.
