The Marine Corps Base Spartans shut out the School of Infantry- West Outlaws and secured their spot in the semi-finals with a 38-0 win at Paige Fieldhouse, Oct. 28.

After winning the coin toss and deferring to the Outlaws, the Spartans forced a three-and-out on the opening drive, setting the tone for the remainder of the night.

The Spartans forced a fumble early in the first, setting up a first-and-10 from the 11-yard line. Spartans running back Ryan Marshall found space around the outside, picking up the first points of the night. The Spartans led 6-0 after an unsuccessful extra point.

The next score of the night came from the Spartans defense after each team gave up three turnovers. Defensive back Mark Cooley intercepted the ball and found the end zone, extending the Spartans lead 12-0 going into the second half.

Already up by two possessions, Spartans running back Mycqwan Nubine found the end zone after he exploded through the Outlaws’ defense. The Spartans now led 18-0.

The Spartans defense struck again on the next drive when defensive back Chad Shepherd got his second interception of the night and turned it into six points. The Spartans went up 24-0.

The Spartans forced two fumbles in the fourth quarter and capitalized on each of them. Nubine was able to hammer the ball in for six on a 10-yard run up the middle, going up 31-0 after their first successful extra point of the night.

The final score came after the Spartans recovered another fumble. Quarterback Cody Miller found his receiver open in the end zone, closing out the game 38-0.

“The Outlaws were a really good team, and their players were playing offense and defense, but thankfully we were a little bit better tonight,” said Shepherd. “Next week we have the Falcons. That should be a close match.”

The Spartans play the Falcons at 7:30 p.m. on the Page Fieldhouse football field, Nov. 4.
