CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. -- The Camp Pendleton Commanding General’s Cup is kicking off for the 2015 season and once again awards, trophies and up to $6,200 in cash prizes are on the line for the top three units in each of the three divisions.
The 1st Marine Division, Marine Wing Support Squadron 372, and Combat Logistics Regiment 1 finished strong last year taking first place for their divisions, bringing home $2,500, $2,000 and $1,700 for their respective Family Readiness units. This year, the gloves are off and all prizes are up for grabs.
“All the events are for the Marines and Sailors in Camp Pendleton. The events build teamwork, camaraderie, unit cohesion and esprit de corps, which are all basic principles of the Marine Corps,” said Eddie Bolanos, sports coordinator with Marine Corps Community Camp Pendleton Athletics.
A racquetball tournament on Jan. 28 at the Paige Fieldhouse starts off the first quarter, followed by an obstacle course challenge on Feb. 18, a flag football tournament on March 18 and a softball league tournament on March 31. All sports events are free for active duty personnel stationed here to participate.
“For me physical competition is a healthy way to relieve stress and build camaraderie and morale. We all work hard together and for two hours, it’s not about rank, it’s about the team. For example, I had a corporal as a quarterback and a captain that was a receiver,” said Master Gunnery Sgt. Kelvin Brown, head coach for the 1st Marine Logistics Group football team.
The Commanding General’s Cup also provides service members with a chance to display their passion for their sports. Marines and Sailors from all experience levels are able to take part in the events, from those who have been playing those sports ever since their childhood, to those looking to try something new.
“Everyone has the opportunity to come together and display their proficiency and confidence when it comes to the sport. All ranks come together for the common good in a no-stress environment, and that gives them a break from the day to day life of being Marine,” said William Perry, head coach with Headquarters and Support Battalion, Camp Pendleton football team.
