Community volunteers will have an opportunity to help improve the native habitat by building bat boxes at Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach Detachment Fallbrook (also known as the Fallbrook Naval Weapons Station) Saturday, Sept. 29.

The 9:00 a.m. to noon event is in celebration of National Public Lands Day, the nation’s largest hands-on volunteer effort to improve and enhance the public lands Americans enjoy.

Volunteers will assemble wooden, prefabricated bat boxes for placement around the installation. The boxes will be used by a variety of native species including the pallid bat and the western mastiff, both California Species of Special Concern.

The event is hosted by the naval weapons station environmental office and is made possible by grants from the Department of Defense Legacy Resource Management Program and the National Environmental Education Foundation.

Reservations are mandatory and must be made by Wednesday, Sept. 26 by calling (760) 731-3609. A name and phone number for each participant must be provided.

Participants are advised to bring picture ID, hats, sunblock, walking shoes (no sandals), gloves and electric screwdrivers (if possible). Additional tools will also be made available on-site. All ages are welcome.

Participants will meet at the station’s Main Gate at 800 Ammunition Road, Fallbrook California, 92028, and be directed onto the base from there.
