Along Camp Pendleton’s Vandegrift Boulevard stands one of California’s many historic El Camino Real bells that has been around long before any Marine or sailor occupied the land. The bell symbolizes the trail used by the Franciscan Padres on the journey to Northern California from Mexico in the 1800s. The Padres were Catholic priests sent by the King of Spain to convert Native Americans of California to Catholicism, in order to become citizens of Spain. Gunnery Sgt. Shane M. Dillon, faculty advisor, Staff Noncommissioned Officers Academy will receive the school’s faculty advisor of the year award. The ceremony commemorated the accomplishment of “10 million man hours” of construction across MCI-West’s seven installations. Due to the upgrades Camp Pendleton, more than 3,000 workers were employed, $1.8 billion was spent on construction, more than $700 million in yearly salaries were paid, and 250 prime construction companies were contracted. - Major General Anthony L.
