MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. -- Camp Pendleton’s semi-annual career expo was held at the South Mesa Club, Feb. 2, for transitioning service members in search of a new career opportunity after honorable service.
The expo is an opportunity for troops, their spouses and Department of Defense employees to submit their resumes to different employers.
“This job fair is designed specifically for military members who are transitioning out into the civilian world,” said Vicki Washington, director, Job Fair Operations, Civilianjobs.com. “We host it like this so that the service members aren’t competing off base with their civilian counterparts.”
The event is unique because it gives the troops an opportunity to pre-register so they are matched with companies whose backgrounds offer the best-fit jobs for their resumes.
“Before coming to the expo, I registered online and submitted my resume,” said Sgt. Everett Galindez, administrative clerk, 1st Combat Engineer Battalion. “When I got here, I already had an outline and map of the best matches for my interests and experiences.”
The event catered to more than 400 job seekers with 44 different employers, and hundreds of career opportunities.
In addition to the one-on-one interaction with company representatives, the attendees also had educational sessions that included 10 transitioning tips, an interview guide to help their future job search, basic resume building, staff agencies’ procedures, the federal hiring process, utilizing the G.I. Bill and tuition assistance program, and tips on transitioning from military to civilian life.
“It’s important for the base to have events like this so that service members are able to have an easy transition from their military life,” said Washington. “It’s a great opportunity for the armed forces and their families to see what is available.”
