Colonel Hal J. Sellers, a native of Des Moines, Iowa. Col Sellers graduated from Iowa State University in 1988 with a degree in history and was commissioned a 2ndLt. Upon completion of The Basic School and the Infantry Officer Course he reported to Camp Pendleton, California for duty with 2nd Battalion, 9th Marines. He served as a Rifle Platoon Commander, Weapons Platoon Commander, Company Executive Officer and Assistant Operations Officer.

 

1stLt Sellers was assigned to Recruiting Station San Diego, California from May of 1992 to June of 1995. He was promoted to Capt in November of 1992.  He served as the Station Operations Officer and Executive Officer.  Upon completion of his tour on recruiting duty, he attended the Army's Armor Officer Advanced Course and Cavalry Leader's Course at Ft Knox, Kentucky.

 

In February of 1996, Capt Sellers reported to 3d Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 29 Palms, California for duty. In May, he assumed command of Company D, which he commanded until July of 1998. In September of 1998, Capt Sellers left active duty. From October of 1998 to June of 2000, he worked as a production supervisor and maintenance manager for the Pepsi Bottling Group in San Diego, California.

 

Maj Sellers returned to active duty in July of 2000 and was assigned as the Ground Liaison Officer, "Wing Grunt", for 3d Marine Aircraft Wing, MCAS Miramar. He participated in numerous exercises, served as the Wing Anti-Terrorism/Force Protection Officer, and participated in post 9-11 contingency planning.  During this tour, Maj Sellers completed the non-resident Marine Corps Command and Staff College seminar.

 

In June of 2002, Maj Sellers reported to 3d Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion for duty as the Executive Officer. In early 2003, the Battalion deployed and participated in Operation Iraqi Freedom I. In June of 2004, Maj Sellers was reassigned to the Operations and Training Directorate at Marine Air Ground Task Force Training Command where he served as the Current Operations Officer. In October of 2004, he was promoted to LtCol.

 

In July of 2005, LtCol Sellers transferred to Camp Pendleton for duty as the Executive Officer of Weapons and Field Training Battalion, MCRD San Diego. In June of 2008, LtCol Sellers reported to the 1st Marine Division and immediately began training for duty on a military transition team. He subsequently deployed to Iraq and spent a year as the Operations and Training Officer for Regional Border Team-North, working with the Iraqi Border Patrol and Ports of Entry Directorate.

 

In October of 2009, LtCol Sellers reported to Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton and was assigned as the Strategic Plans and Integration Officer.

 

He assumed command of Security Battalion and duties as the Assistant Chief of Staff for Security and Emergency Services on 24 June 2010.  He was promoted to his current rank on 1 July 2010.

 

His personal decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (with gold star), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (with two gold stars) and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.

 

He is married to the former Betsy Cunningham of Urbandale, Iowa. They have three sons, Alex, Erik and Dillon.
