MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDLETON, Calif -- Already known for outstanding accomplishments, of more than 40,000 mishap-free flight hours and Chief Naval Operation Safety Award, Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 367 has another achievement to add to the list - the nomination of Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron of the Year.
The squadron, known as "Scarface," is home to approximately 300 Marines, with each and every one playing a role in the success or failure of the squadron.
"The squadron was nominated for their teamwork, and everyone pulling their load," said LtCol. James F. Jamison, commanding officer. "The strength and leadership of the staff noncommissioned officers has put our squadron above any other. They make sure everything is safe."
Not only does the squadron receive awards, but outstanding marks on missions as well, said Maj. Scott Olinger, pilot. The squadron successfully completed combined arms exercise 5-6 and deployments with the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit, with high marks.
"I've never seen a squadron like this," said Cpl. Shaun P. Dove, 22, Columbus, Ga.,. "I think the aircraft look a lot different now, from when I first started working on the birds -- a little rough around the edges -- because we've flown them so much to achieve our flight hours."
The squadron's achievements in Marine aviation during the past year have earned them the nomination, said Jamison. "By working hard, the squadron has distinguished itself as one of America's most capable and combat ready unit."
"It makes me proud to be in the squadron, and it let's me know we've been trained well," said LCpl. James M. Slocum, 22, Poukeepsie, N.Y.
"I think we should win it - we deserve it. We put in a lot of hard work. All the other helicopter squadrons think we're the best," said LCpl. William T. Allen, 20, Fort Worth, Texas. "I have a lot more pride in my job now."
"We feel like champs! Now we can go home and tell our parents about being nominated for the award," said Cpl. Jerry G. Oleson, 23, Byron, Ill. "We will still do our job the same, regardless of if we won the award or not."
The squadron should find out who the winner of the award is in a few months.
