Even with height, weight and eye patches to their disadvantage, the Angry Pirates dodge ball team took the Single Marine Program’s 2006 Combat Regional Jan. 18 at the 43 Area Gymnasium.

Four teams showed up to compete: the War Heroes, the Angry Pirates, Grease Monkeys and Combat Rocks.

“We were playing dodge ball for physical training and I heard about the competition from the (43 Area) gym,” said Jushon Winters, an Angry Pirates dodge ball player whose squad dipped, ducked and swashbuckled its way to the final duel against Combat Rocks where the Angry Pirates won two-of-three matches. The Angry Pirates didn’t lose, finishing with a 4-0 record.

“I think its good for Marines to get out there and be competitive,” said Tommie Kitchen, the Angry Pirates captain.

Although the Angry Pirates dodge ball team walked away with the trophies, Marine Corps Community Services intramural sports coordinator Phil Bryant, assured teams they would have two more chances to qualify for the Pendleton’s Cup Championships.
