Military families affected by Katrina lend helping hands

8 Sep 2005 | Staff Sgt. Jim Goodwin Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton

In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society has established special accounts to track contributions and disbursements specifically intended to help Marines and sailors affected by the disaster.

The society, which has offices in New Orleans, Gulfport, Pas-cagoula, Pensacola and Meridian have helped families with funds for evacuation prior to the storm and now have begun the longer-term process of helping to meet the needs of many families who will be displaced for days, weeks and months ahead.

Individuals, organizations and corporations wishing to make a donation to help these families should visit the Web site or send a check payable to NMCRS (or Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society) and mail it to their Headquarters; 875 North Randolph Street, Suite 225, Arlington, Va., 22203.

Keep in mind that the society is not in a position to accept donated articles of clothing, bottled water, canned food or other items of substance.

Such contributions are being coordinated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) - (202) 646-4600.

- Specific information for military personnel and family members directly impacted by Katrina can be found at www.militaryonesource.com or by calling (800) 342-9647.

- The offical Marine Corps Web site, www.usmc.mil, also contains information and links concerning Katrina.

- Contributions can also be made through this year's Combined Federal Cam-paign. For a complete list of CFC organizations which support relief efforts, visit: www.opm.gov/cfc.

Katrina Tips

Remember that everyone is trying to reach their loved ones. Once you are able to make phone calls or send emails, keep your communication to a minimun. Ask one person to be your main contact so that he or she can let others know you are safe. Give your main contact person the names and phone numbers or e-mail addresses of everyone you want to reach.
