MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. -- More than 950 Marines, sailors and families members attended the fall Caree Fair coordinated by the Family Member Employment Assistance Program at the South Mesa Club, Sept. 25.
During the event, 130 businesses were able to discuss local and national job opportunities with job seekers, said Autumn Rillos, event coordinator, FMEAP, Marine Corps Community Services.
The event was tailored to those exiting the military and military spouses looking for a local job. Many of the positions available at the fair were similar to many Marine Occupational Specialties on base, added Rillos.
“So Marines in these (MOS’) can transfer directly into their new jobs,” she explained.
While many came prepared with resumes in hand, others simply strolled through the tables, collecting contact information and talking to business representatives.
One job field especially interested in recruiting Marines and sailors was police and security departments.
“They already have many of the skills we need,” said Jon Webb, police officer, patrol division, National City, Calif., Police Department. “They can superviseas well as take orders. Many of them also want to help people,” he added.
Webb from National City, explained they have previously hired candidates from Camp Pendleton, and although they were only looking to hire four policemen through this job fair, they are always looking for new candidates.
During the fair, Cpl. Raphael F. Grierson Jr., air support net operator, Marine Air Support Squadron 3, spoke to security organizations including the United States Secret Service.
“I want to do something hands-on or stay a man in uniform,” said Grierson from Brooklyn, N.Y. “I am proud of how I look and what I do. I just want to continue to have a job that impacts,” he added.
