Tax season has started and Camp Pendleton is helping Marines and their family members by providing free tax preparation.

Camp Pendleton’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance center officially opened its doors with a ribbon cutting ceremony by Col. Philippe D. Rogers, commanding officer, Headquarters Support Battalion, Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Jan. 19.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance offers free individual income tax preparation services to all military personnel, retirees, and their families.

Services are now provided at three locations; Mainside at building 1687, and at the San Onofre and Abby Reinke community centers.

“Having a free tax preparation service definitely makes things easier for spouses,” said Jennifer Ervin, Marine spouse whose husband is currently deployed. “A few years ago, we paid more than $300 off base, and now we get the same service for free.”

Tax preparation service is a first come, first served basis and patrons should plan on going early because services may be cut off if there is more than a two hour waiting time close to the end of the business day.

All customers are required to provide the proper documentation including military identification cards, W2 forms, social security cards for dependents and any documentation pertaining to mortgage, property, childcare and itemized deductions.

“All our personnel has been trained and certified by the IRS,” said Sgt. Orlando Ruiz, VITA staff non commissioned officer in charge. “We are doing our best to help our service members, retirees and families to the last detail.”

For joint returns, both parties must be present, unless one has a power of attorney granting permission to sign for the spouse.

All locations are scheduled to be open from Tuesday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The centers will be closed Sundays and Mondays.
