MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. -- Two members of Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton’s Headquarters and Support Battalion were selected to receive the 2010 National Image Meritorious Service Award, for their commitment to community involvement and devotion to equal opportunity.
The award annually recognizes one active duty, one reservist and one civilian from each branch of military service, who have distinguished themselves while promoting the responsibilities of civil and human rights in the armed forces and their communities.
Headquarters Marine Corps announced Sgt. David E. Vogt. III and Rebecca M. Gamboa as the Marine Corps’ active-duty and civilian winners of the award.
The National Image 2010 Meritorious Service Award, honors military members and Department of Defense civilian employees, who supported the DoD mission, overseas contingency operations, or whose attributes are best epitomized by the qualities and core values of the respective military service or agency.
Vogt spent more than 600 hours volunteering at Camp Pendleton’s schools, animal shelter, Rotary Club and several other local organizations. He also served as the president of the H&S Battalion’s Noncommissioned Officers Association.
“I have always had great pride for our battalion,” said Vogt, assistant legal chief, Office of the Staff Judge Advocate, H&S BN, MCB Camp Pendleton. “But when I learned two members of this unit got this award, it didn’t surprise me because of the amount of pride our commanding office has instilled in all of us.”
Gamboa actively supported the largest multi-cultural organization within the U.S., avidly aid widows through the Surviving Spouse Group of Southern California and is currently serving as H&S Battalion’s family readiness officer.
“I can’t say no to someone in need,” said Gamboa, FRO, H&S BN, MCB Camp Pendleton. “If some calls and asks me to help, I’m there.”
Both will be honored at the 38th Annual Federal Employee Leadership and Diversity Training Conference in San Diego, April 8.
