Memorial Day rounds off Annual Military Appreciation Month

May 2010 marks the 12th Annual Military Appreciation Month.

In 2004, U.S. Congress passed a resolution officially marking the month to honor the men and women who gave their lives in defense of freedom, and those who have and are now serving our country.

It is only natural for the month of May to have officially been designated. During the month falls Loyalty Day, May 1; Military Spouse Appreciation Day, May 7; Victory in Europe Day, May 8; Armed Forces Day, May 15; and Memorial Day, formerly known as Declaration Day, which usually falls on the last Monday of the month.

“So many of us look at Memorial Day as just another holiday to have fun,” said Brondhaver. “But in reality, it’s a time where we should be honoring and remembering all of our fallen comrades that are like family to us.”

Recognition of the month began as Armed Forces Week, established in 1949, following the consolidation of all the military branches into the U.S. Department of Defense.

“This month is a great way to recognize the service that we all put forth every day,” said Sgt. Todd Brondhaver, legal administrative clerk, Headquarters and Support Battalion, Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton.

The freedoms that United States citizens enjoy today are thanks to those men and women who have fought and served throughout our history, are now serving, their families, and those who have given their lives in defense of our country, said Marie Moisant, Marine spouse and base resident. They have all dedicated their lives as Americans citizens and warriors.
