Sailing off the coast of California during sunset is only a fantasy for some, but Camp Pendleton occupants can have that experience at an affordable price.

Camp Pendleton’s Del Mar Marina offers a Sunset Harbor Cruise twice a month that travels leisurely throughout base’s local waters. An 18-foot covered boat cruises through Del Mar Boat Basin and Oceanside, Calif.’s Harbor, while patrons are served hors d‘oeuvres during sunset hours.

"Being able to watch the sunset in the middle of the ocean is a perfect combination,” said Ann Smith, lead instructor, Del Mar Marina, Marine Corps Community Services, Camp Pendleton. “It’s a chance to, just, get away.”

“Sailing is usually an expensive outing,” said Smith. “But the Marina makes it extremely affordable for service members.”

The cruise cost is $15 and is open to all associated members of the military.

The Sunset Harbor Cruise is only one activity offered by Del Mar Marina. They also offer sailboat, powerboat and kayak rentals, sailing lessons and boat slips.

“It was a great opportunity for me to feel the wind in my face,” said Gina S. Roderick, cruise participant and military spouse. “I’d recommend the cruise to anyone who needs a little time to themselves.”

The Del Mar Marina is open Wednesday through Sunday, year-round, and for all summer federal holidays. Hours of operation are seasonal. Currently their summer hours are 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
