MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. -- Excitement and anticipation filled the gymnasium of Camp Pendleton’s Paige Field house during 2010 Pendleton Cup Volleyball League semi-finals, Oct. 20.
Marine Corps Community Services’ Pendleton Cup series provides active duty personnel, regardless of skill or experience, an opportunity to take part in a variety of competitive unit sports while competing for monetary prizes to be given to their respective unit's funds.
The two finalists, Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton and Supply Battalion, Combat Logistics Regiment 15, were both seeded first for the playoff series. The semi-finals began with NHCP versus Assault Craft Unit Five’s Swift Intruders. The Naval Hospital team won the series with the scores, 25-19, 17-25, and 15-6.
“We wanted this match,” said John De Geus, NHCP. “I stepped it up a little today and so did everyone else. Everyone played well.”
The second semi-final match featured Supply Battalion versus Marine Corps Installations West. Supply Battalion defeated MCI West in the three-game series, 25-13, 23-25, 15-10 earning them the spot in the finals.
“It’s exciting to even make it this far,” said Sanhareb Raben, MCI West team. “Even though we’re not first, we still have a good name for our unit by making it to the semi-finals.”
The finals are slated to occur 6:30 p.m. Oct. 25 at the Paige Field House. The event will feature ACU-5 and MCI West to compete for first and third place, and NHCP versus Supply Battalion for the championship.
