On your marks, get set, register! Hard Corps Race Series opens registration

6 Jan 2011 | Lance Cpl. Mike Atchue Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton

Southern California runners can start lacing up their running shoes as registration for Camp Pendleton’s 2011 MARSOC Hard Corps Race series opened Jan. 1.

The 10-part race series tests Pendleton’s active-duty athleticism against athletes from San Diego to Los Angeles counties in races that all take place on base.

“This has to be one of Camp Pendleton’s most distinguished traditions, where individuals from all over can get together and have a great time competing,” said Anthony “T.C.” Carson, director, Hard Corps Race Series, Camp Pendleton. “We try to bridge the gap between service members and civilians to demonstrate how their lifestyles aren’t so different.”

Athletes have competed in this yearly tradition since it was first offered on the base’s rugged terrain in 1995.

“I participate in the series every year because it’s a fun and easy way to set and keep my fitness goals throughout the year,” said Capt. Angela Zunic, adjutant, Marine Aircraft Group 39, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, and the race series’ 2010 military female champion. “Participating in the races lets you see the different areas of the base you normally wouldn't unless you worked in that area.”

Zunic is just one of the many thousands of participants who register for the events every year.

The most popular event of the entire series is the World Famous Mud Run that takes place every June. Even with an increase from 15,000 to 18,300 slots, the event’s three renditions sold out within 35 hours.

While the most popular event may be sold out, spaces are available for other events, including the inaugural 26-mile Bulldog Bike Race, which takes place along the base’s coastline, Feb. 27.

Civilians and military members from other bases looking to test their endurance must pay an entry fee, which varies from $20 to $75, depending on the event in which they will compete. Camp Pendleton-based, active duty military can enter for free.

“All funds collected from the series go right back to the military personnel and their families,” Carson said. “The proceeds are donated to numerous base programs and Marine Corps Community Services to provide a better quality of life with events such as concerts, family days and holiday events for those standing up for freedom.”
