Pendleton hosts 19th Annual Retiree Expo

MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDLETON -- Marine and Family Programs hosted the 19th Annual Retiree Expo at the Pacific Views Event Center, Sept. 15.

The Expo allowed government agencies and the local military community to provide information on issues pertaining to retired military, retired department of Defense personnel and their family members.

"We try to bring relevant sponsors and vendors and give (retirees) a presentation on legislative issues to keep them aware," said Jim White, the retired activities officer. "We also want to update them on things like TRICARE."

Community agencies like TRICARE for Life, National Cemetery Administration and Navy Medical Center Health Promotions were available to answer inquires and refered retirees to the appropriate service organizations.

"The Defense Account and Finance Services, get to be face-to-face with retirees and provide an opportunity for them to resolve pay issues and even change beneficiaries. This is the one chance during the year when they get to do that," said White.

White said, retirees really love being informed about things taking place on Camp Pendleton because the base has such a big impact on what services they receive.

Brig. Gen. Vincent A. Coglianese, the commanding general of Marine Corps Installation - West, Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, was also in attendance to answer questions.

“Your Marine Corps base has never been better. These young men and women are combat hardened, are used to deploying in harm’s way and are well trained,” said Coglianese. “The nation has given us a lot from: facilities, weapons, training and barracks facilities and we are grateful. With the drawdown the Corps will be ready even when the nation is least ready.”

"I had questions about my service connected disability," said Adam Scelso, retired Army sergeant. "I think it was very beneficial for me to get updated on this information. It helps to see what I need to do next."
