CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. -- Marines and sailors gathered to commemorate the 237th Birthday of the United States Marine Corps at the base theater here Nov. 9.
The event featured a display of the evolution of Marine uniforms with each time period, talking about significant combat operations dating back to the Corps’ foundation in 1775.
“Throughout history Marines have earned the unwavering reputation of America’s warfighters,” said Brig. Gen. Vincent A. Coglianese, the commanding general of Marine Corps Installations West – Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. “As we reflect on the past, we must celebrate the milestones and accomplishments that contribute to our continued success as a command and corps.”
The birthday pageant held a traditional cake cutting ceremony, with the first piece being presented to the guest of honor, Lt. Gen. John A. Toolan Jr., the commanding general of I Marine Expeditionary Force. The second piece was shared by the oldest Marine present, Master Gunnery Sgt. Roosevelt A. Adrianza, the intelligence chief for I MEF G-2, and the youngest Marine Present, Lance Cpl. Michael M. Estes with Combat Logistics Regiment 15. The traditional cake cutting ceremony represents the passing on of old traditions though the generations.
The pageant also included massing of colors from Camp Pendleton and music played by the 1st Marine Division Band.
