CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. -- The 98th US Congress designated the third Monday in January a national holiday in honor of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., first observed Jan. 20, 1986. This year's national observance of King’s Birthday will be celebrated on Jan. 21.

Congress established the holiday as a day of remembrance of King's life, sacrifices, and accomplishments.

"As Marines, we pride ourselves in knowing our history,” said Brig. Gen. Vincent A. Coglianese, base commanding general and regional authority for five military installations in the Southwestern United States. “Pioneers like Martin Luther King Jr. have had a direct, positive impact on the history and future of our Corps. We all need to reflect on his contributions to our country and our Marine Corps."

According to the Marine Administrative Message 005/13, the permanent theme for this holiday is remember, celebrate, act, a day on, not a day off. This theme serves as a reminder that the holiday is a day for community and humanitarian service, activities and programs. King put his life on the line for freedom and justice and ultimately died striving to make equality a reality for all Americans.

During the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday observance, Marines have the opportunity to take time to recognize and celebrate King's life and contributions to this country.
