CAMP PENDLETON, Calif -- Camp Pendleton’s Marine and Family Services is offering a career workshop for spouses on base.
The workshop aims to provide the tools needed to be successful in the workforce by identifying participants’ skills and teaches them how to use labor market data to develop successful career strategies.
Future workshops will be held at the Mainside Marine and Family Programs, Building 13150, on Jan. 15, 27 and 29, Feb. 10 and 12, March 10 and 12 and March 24 and 26. Classes will be conducted from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
“Employers now use screening software, social media and other tools to screen people out and today’s labor market has become more competitive,” said Lana Massimini, lead employment specialist with the Family Member Employment Assistance Program. “That’s why potential employees need to step it up and show employers what they can do, what their value is, and how they can meet and exceed employer expectations.”
The workshop focuses on how the applicants can effectively market themselves by building resumes that focusing on marketable skills that companies consider valuable.
“For most people, they might feel that they are bragging about themselves,” said Massimini. “We empower participants with the knowledge of who they are and what they have to offer. When they focus on working on their resume, they start to recall accomplishments that they may have forgotten.”
The workshop features subject matter experts that specialize in various backgrounds, such as career coaching, educational and training resources, employment assistance, interviewing skills, job search strategies, networking, resume assistance, salary negotiations, and using social media to market themselves.
“Technology is everywhere and is the most utilized recruiting method by employers whether it’s researching the potential employees or for applicants to better market themselves and safeguard their information,” said Connie M. Vasquez, an employment specialist with the program. “First impressions are the most important impressions, and we teach them how to make a good first impression online.”
Whether it is their first time attending the workshop or they are repeat attendees, the program encourages spouses and family members to participate as much as they can.
“I’ve been working for the Department of Defense for 18 years and I recently relocated from Hawaii to California, and there’s a different level of competition in the labor market here,” said Lori Lefor, a participant at the workshop. “I’ve been to the course multiple times and I feel that it’s given me real information I could use for resume writing, researching job positions and just honing in on those skills that I already have which can put me above other applicants.”
