Frank C. Christl of San Clemente was awarded the U.S. Congressional Gold Medal by Brig. Gen. Edward Banta for serving as a Montford Point Marine from 1944-1946 on Jan. 16.

Christl is included with the Montford Point Marines because as an officer he was instrumental in forming the 5th Depot Company and leading them to Saipan, the invasion of Okinawa, and repatriation duty in Tientsin, China.

“He is truly among the many brave and selfless Marines whose efforts helped break the barriers of segregation,” Brig. Gen. Edward Banta said about Christl. “The Congressional Gold Medal signifies the highest expression of national appreciation for distinguished achievement.”

“Thank you for your courage, your leadership, and your direct contribution to our Corps rich history and legacy. We are proud to have you among the ranks who have worn the cloth of our Corps in service of this great nation. Semper Fidelis,” Banta concluded.

The ROICC is planning to close the Las Pulgas Gate and a portion of Las Pulgas Road from 0600 to 2300 on 10 Jan 15 as part of a MILCON project to install a cross-base water line. Las Pulgas Road will remain open east of the Stuart Mesa Road intersection. Traffic bound for training and cantonment areas in the vicinity of the Las Pulgas Gate should use the Basilone Gate or the Main Gate during the closure.

That notification, which can be accessed through the link provided below, highlights that follow-on, confirmation testing has been conducted; that those tests were within permitted limits; and that there are no actions required by you, our customers. We continue to closely monitor the Base's water systems to ensure the quality is protective of the health of our Marines, sailors, families, and the employees that live and work on Camp Pendleton.

Bryant were presented with the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal for meritorious service and the Navy Meritorious Civilian Service award, for heroic actions that saved the life of a Marine, at the Military Police Department headquarters building here, Dec. 17.

Brig. Gen. Edward Banta visited each of the five on-base schools over the last two weeks as part of the commanding general's annual tour. The purpose of the visits are to meet the faculty and students, to see how each campus operates, and to identify and problems that need to be fixed.
