Acting Under Secretary of the Navy Gregory J. Slavonic hands a plaque for the Department of Defense’s Large Fire Department of the Year award to Ken Helgerson, the fire chief for the Camp Pendleton Fire Department, during a ceremony at Marine Memorial Golf Course on Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California, Oct. 27, 2020. This is the sixth time CPFD has been selected for the award. Slavonic traveled to Southern California to meet with sailors and Marines, gaining enhanced insight to fleet modernization, cyber and readiness efforts that will ultimately build a more lethal force.
