On June 6, 1944, over 160,000 Allied troops landed on the heavily-fortified, Nazi occupied beach, of Normandy, France, as part of Operation Overlord. Over 5,000 ships and 13,000 aircraft aided the troops on the shore in securing the beach, and ensuring the Allied invasion as a victory. However the victory came at a hefty cost, more than 9,000 Allied soldiers gave their lives during the invasion. It was because of their sacrifices, that the Allies were able to secure a foothold in Europe, and eventually win the war. (U.S. Marine Corps photo illustration by Lance Cpl.
