Then-Cpl. Robert J. Mitchell, of Omaha, Neb., talks with a Marine combat correspondent as he prepares to depart Iraq Nov. 24, 2004, less than two weeks after receiving his fourth battlefield wound in Fallujah during Operation Phantom Fury. Mitchell, a squad leader with 3rd Platoon, Company K, 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, received most of these wounds during a close quarters fight for an insurgent stronghold where his deeds would later earn him a Navy Cross.
