Camp Pendleton is home to where the first known Christian baptism was performed in California in 1769, when the Spanish traveled through Alta California to colonize the region. During this expedition, Father Francisco Gomez baptized two ill Native American Acjachemen children. To honor this sacrament, the missionaries named the area Cristianitos, meaning “little Christians.”
