U.S. Marine Corps photo by Lance Cpl. John Robbart III/Released 110324-M-3215R-004.jpg

With the traditional iron sights, Marines would make adjustments for wind and for distance by turning knobs near the rear sight. Now, by undoing a cap that covers the dials the adjustment knobs are used to acquire a battle sight zero, or BZO, a baseline to begin shooting. Headquarters and Support Battalion, Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton recently upgraded its armory with more than 300 M16A4 service rifles equipped with the rifle combat optic, a newer technology designed to improve accuracy. Combat marksmanship trainers assist Marines in making the switch from iron sights to this more efficient method.
