Over 5,000 ships and 13,000 aircraft aided the troops on the shore in securing the beach, and ensuring the Allied invasion as a victory. However the victory came at a hefty cost, more than 9,000 Allied soldiers gave their lives during the invasion. It was because of their sacrifices, that the Allies were able to secure a foothold in Europe, and eventually win the war.
