CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. --

Eric Peterson and Leana Mason took first place respectively for the Men’s and Women’s divisions of the half marathon race during the 2015 Heartbreak Ridge Run held here, April 11.

More than 940 servicemembers and civilians participated in the event which is comprised of a half marathon, 10 km, 5 km and kids’ races.

Peterson came in at 1:27:33, while Mason crossed the finish line at 1:39:53.

Carlos Altamirano and Sarah Lyon came in first for the 10 km race. Kevin Mesa and Mary Alice took first place for the 5 km race.

“I do a lot of ‘5k’ races and this one is my favorite,” said Mesa. “Registration was cheap and the race was well organized. Plus, I got to compete with my fellow Marines and Sailors. It’s a fun, challenging course and there’s easy parking. What more could you ask for?”

The run is part of the Hard Corps Race Series; a series of races that are offered to the public.

“It’s all about healthy lifestyles and combat fitness for our active duty Marines,” said Sam Pelham, event coordinator and director of the Semper Fit Division. “The series offers challenges and opportunities to compete with other servicemembers and civilians. It brings out the best in them.”

The series is comprised of the Hellfire Fat Tire mountain bike race, the Heartbreak Ridge Run, the Mud Run, the Semper Triathlon and Devil Dogs Duathlon, the Amphibious Assault water races and the Tour De Camp Pendleton bike race.

“The Hard Corps Race Series exposes civilians to more about what the Marine Corps is doing and provides them with the opportunity to meet Marines and build a better relationship with the base itself, said Pelham. “The fees contribute to the Semper Fit programs, so civilians that participate in our races help pay for our other programs for our Marines.”

The first, second and third place winners received ammo cans engraved with the race logo and were recognized after the event.
