In an effort to provide updates on benefits and services available to military retirees, Camp Pendleton hosted the 18th Annual Military Retiree Expo at the base’s South Mesa Club, Sept. 17.

The expo, which was sponsored by Marine Corps Community Services, featured various vendors who offered information to the retirees and their family members to help them throughout the course of their retirement.

“We have events like these to spread the word of programs offered gauged specifically toward retirees,” said James O. White, readiness manager, Marine and Family Services, MCCS. “A lot of times retirees are unaware of the benefits that are available to them.”

The event was open to military retirees as well as their spouses and family members. Each program was offered through the Retired Activities Office, which refers retired members to appropriate service organizations.

The expo is gauged toward bringing the retirees and family members in direct contact with agencies and/or individuals who can provide them with valuable retirement resources.

“My wife and I come every year,” said Robert Reid, a retired staff sergeant who also brought along his wife. “It’s a great opportunity to learn about new programs and re-visit the old ones, too.”

After the attendees had an opportune amount of time to view the vendors, a brief was given informing patrons about financial issues, post-service entitlements, health care benefits, and legislative updates.

In addition to general knowledge gained at the expo, the attendees were also given offered dental screenings and blood tests for high blood sugar/pressure at no cost.
