Marines and sailors took part in the Combat Conditioning Training Course, created by Semper Fit, and held at Paige Field House aboard Camp Pendleton, Jul. 23-24.

This two-day course is geared to prepare Marines for combat through classroom lectures and hands on training.

“[This course] is a better rounded approach to getting away from the body building mentality,” said Joe Artino, the fitness programs supervisor of Semper Fit.

The practical application portion of the class includes total resistance exercise (TRX), kettle-bell, and power lifting exercises.

“Hopefully the Marines will take the skills they learn during the course and bring them back to their units,” Artino said. When they are in better shape, then they will be more capable of doing their jobs.

Gunnery Sgt. Timothy C. Harvey, a sensors employment chief and combat conditioning instructor for 1st Battalion, 11th Marines, expressed his thoughts on the training he and his three Marines received during the course.

“I learned a lot of stuff I didn’t know about nutrition, the advanced exercise techniques, and how to put the workouts together with a purpose,” Harvey explained.

Lectures on nutrition and injury prevention are included to help the Marines learn to get the most out of their workout in a safe way.

“We see Marines as tactical athletes,” Artino said. “They need to be able to run fast for long distances, jump over things, and they may need to carry their buddy for a certain amount of time. They need to be prepared for that physically, and we’re going to help them achieve that.”
